Menstrual pads are a common and convenient way to manage menstruation, but they can also pose some risks.  The following are some risks associated with using store bought pads.

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) TSS is a rare but serious illness caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). TSS can develop when S. aureus bacteria enter the bloodstream through a break in the skin, such as a cut or abrasion. Menstrual pads can increase the risk of TSS because they create a warm, moist environment that can help bacteria grow.

Irritation and allergies The adhesive used to attach menstrual pads to the underwear can cause skin irritation or allergies in some people. This can be especially common in people with sensitive skin. (me, I’m people)

Environmental pollution Menstrual pads are made of plastic, which is a major source of pollution. When menstrual pads are flushed down the toilet, they can clog pipes and end up in waterways, where they can harm wildlife.

If you’re concerned about the dangers of menstrual pads, there are a number of alternative products available, such as menstrual cups and reusable cloth pads. These products can help to reduce your risk of TSS, inflammation, allergic reactions, and waste. According to healthine.com these pads are made of cotton and are ecofriendly.
